In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, it’s easy to feel disconnected—from nature, from our bodies, and even from ourselves. After a long day working on a laptop, I often find solace in a simple yet powerful act: walking barefoot on the earth.

One of my favorite grounding practices—and something I’ve been doing for over 10 years—is walking barefoot on grass, soil, or even snow (yes, I’ve done it!). This practice, known as "earthing" or "grounding," is an incredible way to reduce stress and anxiety. I first came across it during my naturopathic studies, and ever since, it’s been one of my go-to ways to feel calm, centered, and reconnected.
Why Walking Barefoot Helps
Our bodies are full of energy, constantly absorbing and releasing electrical charges. The earth carries a natural negative charge, and by walking barefoot, we create a direct connection that helps neutralize excess positive charges in our bodies. Research suggests that this connection can reduce inflammation, improve sleep, and even lower stress hormones.
Beyond the science, there’s also something deeply intuitive about feeling the earth beneath your feet. The sensation of cool grass in the morning or even soft soil after a rain—it’s a natural and effortless way to feel more present.
Making Earthing a Habit
Even in a bustling city like London, we are lucky to have parks and green spaces where we can reconnect with nature. No matter the weather—rain, snow, or sunshine—I make it a point to step outside and walk barefoot. It’s a simple ritual that keeps me grounded, no matter how hectic life gets.
If you haven’t tried it yet, I highly recommend it! Even just once a week, if you have access to a garden or a park, take a few moments to walk barefoot and notice how you feel. At first, I used to be the only one in my local park doing it, but lately, I’ve noticed others joining in—which is amazing!
Final Thoughts
In a world that often pulls us in a hundred different directions, grounding through barefoot walking is a beautiful way to slow down, reconnect, and restore balance. Whether it’s for stress relief, better sleep, or simply a moment of peace, earthing is a practice worth exploring.
So, take off your shoes, step outside, and let nature work its magic. You might be surprised by how much lighter, calmer, and more connected you feel.
