Intuitive Drawing: A Return to Creative Flow

Lately, I’ve been reconnecting with a practice that’s supported me again and again through different chapters of life: intuitive drawing.

day 3
day 3

It started recently when I introduced it into one of my in-person breathwork and sound healing sessions. We drew before the session, and again after. The difference was striking. The first drawings felt quite heavy, a bit like the mind trying to figure things out. But after the breathwork, the energy softened. There was more flow, more openness, more heart. The lines softened. The colors changed. It felt like the unconscious had space to speak.

Since then, I’ve started a personal 21-day intuitive drawing journey, something I’ve done on and off over the years. when I feel the need to reignite my creative spark or simply give expression to what’s alive inside. It’s simple. One drawing a day for 21 days. No need for it to be pretty or perfect. No plan. Just presence.

The drawings are fully intuitive. It’s about letting the energy move through. Some days what comes out is wild and sharp, full of movement and colour. There’s anger or frustration in the lines, in the pressure, in the colours I reach for without thinking. Other days, it’s soft and gentle. Pastels. Light shapes. Tender swirls. It’s always a mirror for what’s going on beneath the surface - even when I’m not aware of it.

And it doesn’t have to take hours. Sometimes I sit for less than five minutes. It’s like a small eruption of energy that needs to come through. I’ve found that it works best when I don’t overthink it. I keep my drawing materials nearby - pencils, some paper, a few colours - and I just sit down and let it move. Sometimes it’s part of my morning practice, sometimes in the evening. Whenever it fits. It’s not about making time. It’s about making space. What I always notice is how I feel after. Lighter. Clearer. More present. Something shifts. It’s subtle, but real. Like something inside has been seen.

This is one of the practices I’ll be weaving into my next day retreat (more to follow), and into The Sanctuary of Becoming, my 5-week online journey starting this September. If you feel the pull to explore your inner world through breath, movement, sound, and creative expression, I’d love to welcome you in.

And if the idea of a 21-day drawing practice speaks to you, try it. No rules. No expectations. Just you, pencils, colours and paper. Just start where you are. Let yourself be surprised by what shows up.
